Confitebor tibi (Psalm 9 / 10)

Voor de psalmen 9 en 10, in de Vulgaat samengenomen onder de aanhef Confitebor tibi, schreef ik een tweeluik. In beide stukken heb ik motieven uit de Geneefse psalmmelodie gebruikt. Die motieven komen steeds voorbij in andere kerktoonsoorten (modi), zoals ik die vond passen bij noties en emoties in de psalmtekst. In de video gebruik ik de Naardense psalmvertaling van Pieter Oussoren, die ik ook telkens raadpleegde tijdens het componeren.

In the Vulgate, the psalm 9 and 10 are combined as ‘Confitebor tibi’, of which I composed a diptych for organ. In both parts, I employ musical material from the Genevan psalm tunes. These musical motives are manipulated through different musical modes, following the emotions of the psalm text. The video shows the Dutch Naardense bijbelvertaling, which was my guide during the composition process.

Afterwards, the piece slowly comes to an end while the psalm text is shown a second time.

Voor psalm 10 nam ik de berijmde versie (vertaling 1967) als uitgangspunt. Vers 1 wordt behandeld volgens de originele kerktoonsoort, vers 2 aeolisch, vers 3 frygisch, vers 4 locrisch, vers 5 aeolisch, en vers 6 mixolydisch.

For psalm 10, I read a metric translation of six stanzas. Each stanza is treated in a musical mode which fit the text: stanza 1 the original mode (dorian), 2nd stanza – aeolian, 3rd stanza – phrygian, 4th stanza – locrian, 5th stanza aeolian, 6th stanza – mixolydian.
